The primary purpose of the School has always been to preserve and share the works of Vitvan. The main source of our funding has been through generous donations. The monies from the sales of books and tapes go into a Publishing Fund, which is used for printing, re-editing, upgrading of equipment, archiving of tapes to digital format, and the maintenance of this website. Our staff provide their labor voluntarily.

With the advent of the Internet, and broadband connections for many users, it is now feasible to make Vitvan's written works and audio lectures available for free download. The texts are in zip archives and need to be decompressed. In most cases they will be in Word format, or rich text format, which should open in any word processor. Over the years the texts have gone through many incarnations, from mimeograph, MacWrite, Pagemaker, Word, Quark, etc. Bit by bit we are converting and streamlining them for easy downloading, and will add them as they become available. You may still order printed versions here.

The audio lectures date back to the earliest days of tape recording in the 1950's, on reel-to-reel. They were later cleaned up for noise, Dolby added, and copied to cassette. Each tape was from 1 to 1 1/2 hr long. So an entire lesson series might be 10-20 hours long. In order to make downloading workable, the tapes have been converted to mp3 format, reduced to mono, and downsampled as much as possible to make file sizes smaller.
